Lotus at Dusk

The Lotus gate was a commissioned piece. The client wanted lotus seed pods within a gate design.

I researched the pods, along with the lotus flower.

I decided to display the lotus flowers closed as buds rather then opened, this followed by the name of the piece “Lotus at dusk”.

I came up with the gate design, with no top rail, giving the feel that the gate had grown, rather than been made. A vine was added to give extra support at the top, which I had adopted from other work I had done previously. It provides an attractive alternative to putting the plants within an entire frame.

The reeds were to make the gaps smaller at the bottom to restrict any cats from gaining access to the garden through the gate.

This gate was to fit a 1 metre wide gap, instead of having one large gate we decided to split the gate into 2/3 and 1/3. This would allow for a pedestrian gate for main access and also a larger opening when required.

The gate was entered into various county show competitions across 2018/2019 and won several awards and prizes.
